Basic function of the welding wire

Basic function of the welding wire

The welding wire is used as a filler metal or as a welding wire bonding material for electrical conduction. In gas welding and tungsten gas shielded arc welding, the welding wire is used as a filler metal; in submerged arc welding, electroslag welding and other gas metal arc welding, the welding wire is both a filler metal and the welding wire is also a conductive electrode. The surface of the welding wire is not coated with an anti-oxidation flux.

The basic functions of the flux composition are outlined below:

(1) Oxygen scavengers and nitrogen scavengers

Since nitrogen and oxygen can cause pores or embrittlement of the bead metal, an oxygen scavenger such as manganese and silicon must be added to the flux. As for the self-protecting flux cored welding wire, AL is additionally added as a nitrogen removing agent in the flux. The purpose of adding the oxygen scavenger and the nitrogen removing agent above is to purify the molten metal.

(2) Welding slag forming agent

Calcium, potassium, sodium or silicon are all slag forming agents. Adding to the flux can effectively protect the molten pool from air pollution. The slag can make the welding props have a better appearance and can be cooled to support the full-position welding. The molten pool. The coverage of the slag can also alleviate the cooling rate of the molten metal. This function is especially important for the welding of low alloy steel.

(3) Arc stabilizer

Sodium and potassium keep the arc soft and smooth and reduce splashing.

(4) alloying elements

The addition of alloying elements such as molybdenum, chromium, carbon, manganese, nickel and vanadium improves (improves) the strength, ductility, hardness and toughness of the filler metal.

(5) Gas forming agent

Fluorite, limestone, etc. need to be added to the self-shielded flux-cored welding wire to generate a protective gas for combustion.
